Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
