Australian Tennis Star Kasatkina Announces Career Break Due to ‘Emotional Strain’

The nation's highest-rated female tennis athlete has chosen to take a break for the remainder of the 2025 season, admitting she is at her “mental and emotional threshold.”

Causes of the Choice

The tennis professional, who earlier switched her nationality from Russia to Australia, blamed the transition for contributing to immense “mental and emotional strain.”

Further contributors involved the ongoing difficulty of being away from her family and the relentless circuit routine.

“I haven't been okay for a considerable period and, honestly speaking, my on-court achievements reflect that,” she posted on digital platforms.

She stated, “Truth is, I've encountered a barrier and must stop now. I require time off. A pause from the monotonous daily grind of life on the tour, the constant packing, the outcomes, the stress, the regular competitors (sorry, girls), all aspects of this career.”

Individual Challenges and Future Hopes

“Each person has a limit I can endure and cope with as a person, all whilst competing with the leading players in the world.”

“If this makes me weak, then that's acceptable, it's true. But, I believe in my strength and will grow by taking time off, recharging, reorganizing and renewing. It's time I heeded my own needs for a shift, my mind, my emotions and my physical self.”

She opted to alter allegiance after exiting her nation due to fears for her security, having previously criticized the nation's legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and the conflict in Ukraine. First living in Dubai, she moved to Melbourne and obtained permanent residency in early this year.

She subsequently became engaged to partner an ex-Olympic athlete, who secured a silver medal for Russia at the PyeongChang Games after first representing for her birth nation Estonia.

She additionally shared she has not seen her dad, who remains in Russia, for several years.

Career Context

A French Open semi-finalist in 2022, she had ended the previous four seasons in the elite group but is currently 19th after a challenging season where she won 19 and lost 21.

She is projected to drop out of the elite rankings by the time the home major begins.

The professional athlete stated she will return in the following season, “recharged and motivated,” with the preparation for her home grand slam expected to be a return target.

Industry Impact

The nation's current No. 2 is Maya Joint, ranked 35th globally.

Kasatkina is the latest leading female player to cut short their year, following Paula Badosa and Elina Svitolina, amid a growing pattern of players retiring mid-match.

The WTA requires leading players to participate in a set number of tournaments, including the four grand slams, top-tier competitions, and lower-tier matches.

But elite competitor a leading athlete remarked recently, “It's not feasible to accommodate everything the itinerary. It's possible I will have to choose some events and skip them, although they are mandatory.

“We have to be smart about it - not really unfortunately care about the regulations and just think what's beneficial for us.”
