2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
